Legacy Left Throughout America

“We need to help students and parents cherish and preserve the ethnic and cultural diversity that nourishes and strengthens this community – and this nation.” -Ceaser Chavez

The Chicano Education Movement impacted the racial tension throughout education around the United States. It was the footstep to have representation at all levels of education. This movement provided jobs for more people of color as teachers, professors, and administrators. The Chicano education movement inspired acts such as the No Child Left Behind Act. This movement led to many triumphs within education diversity. The classroom has changed as well as the respect and immunity that is prevalent today.

"I speak not for myself but for those without voice... those who have fought for their rights... their right to live in peace, their right to be treated with dignity, their right to equality of opportunity, their right to be educated." - Malala Yousafzai

New Mexico stands with one the largest percentages of the Chicano/a population. The population has grown and keeps growing because of what many schools have to offer tying with the Chicano/a race. The movements that happened throughout New Mexico's history that took a stand for Chicano Education has forever changed the inequality. The movement through New Mexico is what provided a pathway for our local Hispanic communities and their children who attend Universities and learn about their identity and cultural through ethnic studies. This movement was the reason ethnic studies were created in New Mexico at the University of New Mexico and other institution. Ethnic Studies is culturally relative education for students of color.

The University of New Mexico is very well known for having so many opportunities and areas of studies for all racial interest. Ethnic studies were a department that housed Chicana/o Studies, Africana Studies and Native American Studies at UNM. This department was created to promote a critical understanding, idea and knowledge of present and past cultural awareness. Later this department broke up and every cultural study became it’s own program and later department.  There is now an option for Chicana/o students to receive a Ph.D. Degree in Chicana/o Studies at UNM which would of never happened without the Chicano Movement.

The movements throughout New Mexico held a strong impact on the legacy left within the higher education for cultural studies. There are now Chicana/o academics in almost every department at universities in New Mexico. The push to continue having culturally relevant programs and youth development has been a highlight throughout the university.  The University is a diverse campus that has provided culturally important schooling, scholarships and grants to Chicana/o students in order to showcase the cultural importance and benefits to being a Chicana/o student.
